Overview
SwitchBot took a different route to the smart home: instead of replacing your switches and appliances, it automates the ones you already own. The original SwitchBot Bot is a tiny motorised arm that sticks over a light switch, coffee-machine button or intercom and physically presses it on command. From that one clever idea grew a whole range of retrofit devices - curtain robots, blind tilters, smart locks and sensors.
For renters and anyone who does not want to rewire, that retrofit philosophy is the whole appeal. You can automate a flat without touching the wiring, drilling holes or voiding a tenancy agreement, and take everything with you when you move. It is one of the most no-commitment ways into home automation.
How SwitchBot works
SwitchBot devices talk Bluetooth Low Energy over short range. On their own they work only from your phone nearby, which is fine for a single gadget but limiting for a real smart home. The SwitchBot Hub - the Hub 2 or Hub Mini - solves this by bridging Bluetooth to your Wi-Fi, giving remote access, schedules and cloud automations.
The Hub also brings Matter support. Through it, SwitchBot devices join Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa as standard Matter accessories, so a curtain robot or lock behaves like any other smart device in those apps. That turns a box of quirky Bluetooth gadgets into a properly integrated part of the home.
Because everything is retrofit and battery or rechargeable, installation is genuinely tool-light: peel a sticker, stick the device on, calibrate it in the app. That simplicity is the point - the cleverness is in the mechanism, not in the wiring.

SwitchBot in a real home
Curtains are the standout use. A pair of SwitchBot Curtain robots clip onto an existing curtain track and pull the curtains open and closed - on a sunrise schedule, at dusk, or on a tap - without replacing the rail. For bedrooms, waking to curtains that open with the sun is a small luxury that costs a fraction of motorised tracks.
Access and presence are the next win. The SwitchBot Lock retrofits over an existing deadbolt thumb-turn, adding keyless entry, auto-lock and remote unlock without changing the cylinder or losing your keys. Combined with a Hub, you can check and control the door from anywhere.
Then there are the little jobs the Bot handles: pressing a button on an appliance that has no smart version, flipping a hard-wired switch you cannot easily replace, or triggering an intercom. These are the awkward gaps other brands cannot fill, which is exactly where SwitchBot earns its place.
What to know before you buy
The key limitation to plan around is Bluetooth range. Without a Hub, devices only respond when your phone is close, so for reliable remote control and automation you should budget for a SwitchBot Hub from the outset - treat it as part of the system, not an optional extra.
Also check fit and mounting for the mechanical devices. The Bot needs a switch or button it can physically reach and press, and the Curtain robots need a compatible rail and enough clearance. A minute measuring before you buy avoids the occasional case where a device cannot get purchase on an awkward fitting.

Frequently asked questions
Does SwitchBot need a hub?
For remote control, schedules and voice, yes. On their own SwitchBot devices use short-range Bluetooth, so a SwitchBot Hub is needed to bridge them to Wi-Fi and to Matter for use away from home.
Can it really automate my existing switches?
Yes - that is SwitchBot's core idea. The Bot is a small motor that physically presses a switch or button, so you can automate hardware that has no smart version, without any rewiring.
Does SwitchBot support Matter?
Yes, through the SwitchBot Hub. Once bridged, devices such as locks and curtains appear as standard Matter accessories in Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa.
Is SwitchBot good for renters?
