Yeelight

Wi-Fi / BLE

Smart bulbs, light strips and ceiling lights with rich colour and Apple Home support.

Overview

Yeelight is a lighting specialist. Where broad ecosystems dabble in bulbs, Yeelight makes lighting its whole business - colour and tunable-white bulbs, extendable light strips, desk and floor lamps, and full ceiling fixtures - and it shows in the quality of the light and the smoothness of the control. It grew up within the Xiaomi ecosystem but is very much its own brand now, with strong Apple Home support.

For anyone whose first priority is atmosphere - warm evenings, bright mornings, colour scenes for a film or a party - Yeelight is one of the most satisfying places to start. The light itself looks good, and the automation around it is mature.

How Yeelight works

Most Yeelight devices are Wi-Fi, connecting straight to your router and the Yeelight app with no hub, and many also support Apple HomeKit natively. A subset use Bluetooth for close-range control. The important feature for a serious build is LAN Control: a toggle in the app that lets Wi-Fi bulbs be driven directly over your local network.

That LAN Control mode is what makes Yeelight a good fit for local, reliable automation. With it enabled, a hub such as Home Assistant can talk to the bulbs directly, so lighting scenes fire instantly and keep working even if the internet is down - a noticeable improvement over cloud-only bulbs that lag or fail during an outage.

Beyond raw on/off, Yeelight lighting supports colour, colour temperature, brightness scenes, music sync and gentle sunrise/sunset fades. Those effects are part of the appeal: lighting that does more than switch, and that can set the mood of a room automatically through the day.

Yeelight in a real home

The everyday use is circadian lighting. Bulbs and ceiling lights that wake to a soft warm glow, brighten to crisp daylight for work, and fade to a low amber in the evening make a home feel calmer and can help with sleep - all on an automatic schedule you set once.

Ambience and entertainment are the fun side. A Lightstrip Pro behind a TV or along a shelf, colour bulbs in the living room and music-synced effects turn an ordinary room into a scene for a film night or a party with a single tap. Because it is all one brand, the colours stay consistent across fixtures.

Task and desk lighting round it out. A Yeelight screen bar or desk lamp that brightens when you sit down to work and dims when you leave ties the lighting into presence, so you are never fumbling for a switch - the light simply matches what you are doing.

What to know before you buy

The main thing to enable early is LAN Control, especially if you plan to use a local hub. It is off by default on some models, and turning it on is what unlocks fast, offline-capable automation; without it you are relying on the cloud, which is slower and fails during outages.

Also check HomeKit support per model if Apple Home is your hub - most bulbs support it but not every fixture does. And as with all Wi-Fi lighting, remember that a very large number of bulbs adds many clients to your router; for a whole house of lights, that is worth keeping in mind, though for a flat it is rarely an issue.

Works with

These are the hubs, apps and ecosystems the range connects with. Zigbee models in particular can run on an open hub for fully local control, which is the approach we recommend for a reliable SmartBee build.

Frequently asked questions

Does Yeelight work with Apple Home?

Yes - many Yeelight bulbs and fixtures support HomeKit natively, so they appear directly in Apple Home. It is worth confirming support on the specific model you want.

Can Yeelight run without the cloud?

Yes, if you enable LAN Control. That mode lets Wi-Fi bulbs be driven over your local network by a hub, so scenes keep working during an internet outage.

Is Yeelight only lighting?

Yes - Yeelight specialises entirely in lighting: bulbs, strips, lamps, ceiling lights and desk lighting. That focus is why the light quality and effects are a step above general-purpose bulbs.

What is LAN Control and why does it matter?

LAN Control is a setting that allows local, direct communication with Yeelight bulbs instead of going through the cloud. It makes automations faster and keeps them working offline, which is ideal for a reliable smart home.

Do Yeelight bulbs need a hub?

No. Yeelight Wi-Fi bulbs connect directly to your router. A hub such as Home Assistant is optional and, with LAN Control on, gives you faster local scenes and automations.
